Paul Galdone was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1914 and emigrated to the United States in 1928. After finishing his studies at the Art Student League and the New York School of Industrial Design, Mr. Galdone worked in the art department of a major publishing house. There he was introduced to the process of bookmaking, an activity that was soon to become his lifelong career. Before his death in 1986, Mr. Galdone illustrated almost three hundred books, many of which he himself wrote or retold. He is fondly remembered for his contemporary style, bright earthy humor, and action-filled illustrations, which will continue to delight for generations to come.
Certainly prices have changed, ($10,000 homes!)but that aside, this book will make you a fortune. Still today, over 200 years after Carolus Linnaeus. Really helpful book. This book is by no means a scholarly effort but it is ultimately an effective one as it does provide valuable information to the masses.
In summary, this book was a pleasant surprise. He thinks he’s so clever and so witty, really getting into the spirit of things, sucking back more wine and typing out naughty things to the pretty boy on his screen. The only time that Clendinen stumbles is in reproducing the vernacular of the residents, whether it be southern ("Ohhh, Ah knowah") or Vietnamese or the especially frightening Spanish ("Ah'ma sorreh, Missus Rubio, butta you haffta tah come down anna mooffah your cahr" which reminded me too much of Father Guido Sarducci on Saturday Night Live years ago.
